A British gangster drama starring Ray Winstone, Ian McShane, John Hurt, and Tim Roth doesn't seem like it needs any other actors really, but the filmmakers behind "44 Inch Chest" have gone the extra mile and recruited Tom Wilkinson, Stephen Dillane, Joanne Whalley, and Melvil Poupaud to round out their cast. According to Variety, Malcolm Venville is making his feature directorial debut with this film about a gangster, played by Winstone, out for revenge against his wife (probably Ms. Whalley) and her French lover (probably M. Poupaud). Louis Melles and David Scinto (both of the cult hit "Sexy Beast") wrote the screenplay.
How did this Venville get so lucky? He's apparently done a number of commercials and some photography work, but how do you jump from that to a cast this good, with a script by these two well-reputed English gents? I don't think a first time director has amassed a cast this good since "Reservoir Dogs," also starring Tim Roth. I just hope he knows what to do with them.
