News > WB, Tobey Maguire get Robotech rights

Written by John Lichman

The nostalgia keeps on coming as The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Warner Brothers and Tobey Maguire have acquired the rights to bring Robotech to the big screen–namely, the live-action side. Maguire is looking to take the lead role as Rick Hunter, the reluctant hero, and is producing through his company, Maguire Entertainment.

Harmony Gold, owners of the franchise's U.S. distribution, will executive produce.

Robotech is the re-edited and re-written version of Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, The Super Dimensional Calvary Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospeada. It follows three generations of a war between Earth and the Zentradi as they engage in battle, then begin to adjust to each other and explore the galaxy. Also, it helped spawn the transforming robot genre in the late 1980s.

I guess you could say that I like Robotech. I used to wake up at 5am every morning to watch the cartoons. A few years later I read the novels. A couple years after thatI immersed in the Robotech RPG. A couple years ago I started playing the video games with my kids. Now I'm not saying that makes me cool, but I'm way excited for this movie.

Yeah this is definitely going to be interesting. Haven't watched Robotech since I was about 10 years old.

Macross+ rocks, and Robotech is just Macross from the old days. Throw some Japanese special effects directors on this and keep the cheesy romance to a minimum and this could be a great flick.

NO Dunst! Absolutely NO Dunst!

"NO Dunst! Absolutely NO Dunst!"

What the hell is the matter with you? Did you have to say that? You probably put the idea in their head now!!

I hate you.

I like anything that got robots, especially Jap's anime. With Robotech, I was only 12 that time and now im 28.

So..how it's gonna be for the movie?..Robotech 1(Mactross)?Robotech 2(Southern Cross)? ..Robotech3(Mospeada)? I rather watched Robotech 1 ,skip the 2nd and patiently wait for the 3rd.
Honestly, Macross rocks but the "2nd Gen", Southern Cross is totally boring and their robots is totally .. dull !!..then, the later generation of Mospeada is the ultimate comeback for the real Macross's legacy.I love those bikes!
Apparently ,this live-action movie will be soo controversial as many of Macross 's fans out there ,still dont want to associate Southern Cross and Mospeada as the Next Generation of Macross.
Whatever it will be, i just want to say thank you for the effort to make a live-action movie for Robotech...

Btw,to Maguire Entertainment..if u guys read this,man..please keep those Robotech theme song, especially the Opening theme song for Genesis Climber Mospeada, "Lonely Soldier Boy" . It's really really important. You can use the Jap's version from Andy or even translate it in English or any language..I watched this indie band from Malaysia in youtube.com ,called 'Hujan' doing their own version of Lonely Soldier Boy in their mother-tounge.

It's totally FUN!!! Cross-culture and It shows how Robotech is actually owned by this planet.
