Warner Brothers has bought a spec script from writer-producer Sascha Penn called "The Ditch." The film is a sci-fi thriller set in a future where one of the moons of Jupiter is a maximum security prison reserved for "Earth's worst criminals." According to Variety, the plot goes something like this:
When a prison guard's family is taken hostage, he is coerced into helping the facility's most notorious terrorist, a man who was scheduled to be executed that day, escape.
Sounds fairly generic, but great things could be done if it lands in the right hands (maybe John Carpenter circa 1981). So far no director is attached, but Matt Berenson ("Daddy Day Care"), Adam Kolbrenner and Robyn Meisinger ("Twisted") will produce. Quite the motley bunch.
Variety says that Penn is best known as a music video and documentary producer whose credits include Michel Gondry and Dave Chappelle's "Block Party" and Peter Bogdanovich's "Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: Runnin' Down a Dream," though the sporadically accurate IMDb doesn't acknowledge his role with either project.
