In the wake of the box office flop that was In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale, director Uwe Boll has announced that he'll be returning to low budget filmmaking, largely due to necessity really. Dr. Boll told The Hollywood Reporter:
In the future, I will focus on small films such as (the video game adaptation) Postal or (the Vietnam war drama) Tunnel Rats. These are films that represent my true passion, and they can be done with small budgets.
In the Name of the King, starring Jason Statham, Ray Liotta, Leelee Sobieski, Ron Perlman and more, was released last Friday and made a paltry $3 million, despite the budget of over $70 million. It has to hurt when the newest VeggieTales movie makes more than your sprawling fantasy epic. This is also his third flop following Bloodrayne and Alone in the Dark, both adaptations of video games.
Boll had been getting a lot of his money through German tax shelters, which, fortunately for cinema-lovers, have recently been banned. So what's in store next for Dr. Boll? He's considering an adaptation of another video game shooter called Zombie Massacre. Something to look forward to in 2010.
