I'm not too thrilled with the movies that have been out this month so far. I haven't been excited about a movie since August. That's the way the movie studios want it, I guess…they spend all their time on summer flicks, Christmas flicks, Oscar bait and 'round Halloween horror flicks, making the month of September get lost in the mix.
It'd be one thing if the studios embraced this fact and laid low during September. Then we could have a month when truly indie films get their chance for national recognition (truly indie meaning actually independently financed rather than the vanity imprints owned by the major studios).
But these arrogant douches can't leave us alone, even when they don't even have any product they're peddling. That's why during September, the studios unleash all their false starts–the comedies, dramas and action pictures that didn't test well enough to open during the competitive summer season and aren't good enough to be thrown into the Oscar race.
Now there have been two notable exceptions this year ("3:10 to Yuma" and "Shoot 'Em Up"), but by and large the films being thrown our way are stinkers. I mean, they released the much maligned "Halloween" over a month before, well, Halloween…thanks guys! Thanks for "Balls of Fury," too!
Films like these, "The Brothers Solomon," "Mr. Woodcock" and this weeks' top pic, "The Brave One," all share one thing in common–a certain low level of craftsmanship. Even when a major summer release is brainless, it's usually fun. The same can't be said for these abortions we're being told are movies.
If you've fucked up your movie, or greenlit the wrong script, or whatever the reason may be that your flick sucks, studios? Just release the shit straight to DVD…people who go to Blockbuster will rent the hell out of it…because that's what people who go to Blockbuster do…they rent bad movies. Leave the theaters alone, so they'll be forced to screen some GOOD SHIT during September.
