Editorials > Stephen Chow and Will Smith to Remake The Karate Kid

On Friday, actor Will Smith met with actor-filmmaker Stephen Chow at the premiere of Smith's I Am Legend to discuss the possibility of Chow producing, directing, and acting in a remake of the 1984 classic The Karate Kid. According to AsianPopcorn, Smith was impressed with Chow's Kung Fu Hustle as well as the forthcoming CJ7, which Smith saw a rough cut of.

Chow told the media, "I'm very fond of The Karate Kid and would love to join in the remake project, no matter as a producer, director or actor. But it depends on my schedule. As you know, next year I will work on two movies, Dragon Ball and Journey to the West."

Presumably Chow would be playing the famous Pat Morita role. The rumor is that Smith wants to shoot the film in China.

Any opinions? Is Chow the man for the job or should he and Will Smith keep their hands away from our fond memories of a timeless, Ralph Macchio classic?

Here's a thought: if you want to work together so badly, how's about making a NEW movie, maybe something mildly original, and leaving well enough alone?

Cripes.

I don't think the world is particularly desperate for a karate kid remake.
