News > Rose McGowan to Play "Red Sonja"

Rose McGowan is confirmed for the role of Red Sonja in the film of the same name being produced by Nu Image/Millenium. Though McGowan's boyfriend, director Robert Rodriguez, will produce and "present" the film, Douglas Aarniokoski is the man taking the official reigns of the remake, which should begin production this October.

Not familiar with Aarniokoski? He's spent the lion's share of his career as an assistant director on films such as "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery," Terry Gilliam's "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," and half a dozen Robert Rodriguez projects. So hopefully he's picked up a few good tricks from his employers and co-workers. David White wrote the screenplay.

"Red Sonja" is the story of a fierce young female warrior bent on seeking revenge for the murder of her family. The character was created by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith in a "Conan the Barbarian" comic book, and is sometimes incorrectly attributed to "Conan"-crreator Robert E. Howard.

"Red Sonja" last appeared in cinemas 23 years ago, in the form of Danish actress/reality show star Brigitte Nielsen. Arnold Schwarzenegger co-starred.
