Every time a video game is selected for screen adaptation, a nerd loses his virginity. That being the case, now that the best selling video game of all time has not only found a director but a start date as well, at least a few thousand have popped their cherry. You might expect next year's Comicon to have a smaller crowd.
IESB.net confirms that Hollywood mogul to the max Jerry Bruckheimer has tapped Michael Bay to direct Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time with a release date of summer 2009. But check this out:
The original creator of the game, Jordan Mechner, has said that "Rather than do a straight beat-for-beat adaptation of the new videogame, we're taking some cool elements from the game and using them to craft a new story - much as 'Pirates' [of the Caribbean] did with the theme park ride."
This is good to hear because every time I hear the word "elements" in regards a video game movie, I think of those absurd rocket boots from Super Mario Bros. Yeah they were kinda cool, but it's like what the hell? Somehow between The Bruck and Bay, I expect we should see a whole lot more than gas-powered sneakers.
Sands of Time, a trilogy, first released in 2003 to widespread critical acclaim, and with two successful follow-ups in 2004 and 2005. The story centers around a prince who teams up with a rival princess to stop an evil ruler from unleashing a sandstorm that could destroy the world. Much daring-do and gettin-it-on should ensue for the adapt.
Mechner has already penned the first draft if the script, with Jeffrey Nachmanoff penning the subsequent drafts. No word yet on casting but check out these awesome concept pics released by Disney early last month:
Sorry guys! We had to take down the photos. Hope you saw them while you could.
