After looking for reviews at 8 a.m. Friday. . .

Saw this on The LA Times:
"Rob Zombie's re-imagining of "Halloween" also opens today in general release. Because MGM and Dimension Films did not screen the film in advance for critics, The Times' review will run in Saturday's Calendar and appear online as soon as it is available."

Oh boy, it must be a stinker. That's too bad, because I have much respect for Zombie's "The Devil's Rejects," even though I'm not so sure I like it.

The one legit review is from Variety, which says the movie spends lots of time explaining how Michael Myers became so darn hostile. Wasn't the suspense from the original generated by the fact you really didn't know all that much about 'the shape.?'

"Despite variations on scenes from Carpenter's film (as well as heavy use of his creepy music theme in Tyler Bates' score), it's all sound and fury with little kick. The literal-mindedness not only demystifies the destructive force, it leaves one questioning logic that didn't matter before (like, how did he get so massively strong sitting 15 years in a padded cell?)."

Howard Stern raved about the movie last week, before taking his 913th vacation day of the summer, but, in my opinion, that was clearly a paid advertisement, as they had Zombie on the phone ready to talk.

Deadline Hollywood Daily is predicting the movie will make tons of money over the Labor Day weekend, which isn't surprising, 'cause there ain't nothing else opening!

UPDATE: Orlando's Roger Moore calls it 'pretty crappy' in his blog.

I can't see it bombing, though -- it's been all over Digg and MySpace.

UPDATE, PART DEUX: A poorly written fan boy review can be found here. It says, in closing,

"The film is pretty boring. Everyone was yawning and even the diehard fanboys in the audience walked away a little sad. Don’t even waste your time with this movie, not even the impressive potential of Rob Zombie has the ability to make Michael Myers interesting. Go out and beat up ugly kids with long hair instead."
