That's right, they couldn't let the 1978 cult classic rest in peace. M. Dal Walton III (Day of the Dead (remake), Terror Train (remake)) has purchased the rights from Killer Tomato Entertainment and is planning to produce, you guessed it, a remake of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kent Nichols and Douglas Sarine, "creators of the hit Web series 'Ask a Ninja,' are writing the adaptation" and Nichols will make his directorial debut.
Here's a good sound byte from Nichols accompanied by the astute commentary of THR:
"Attack of the Killer Tomatoes! is the masterwork of a generation," Nichols said. "We can only aspire to recapture that magic." No changes to the original plot have been revealed, but it still is expected to revolve around killer tomatoes.
I don't know if either is being facetious, but I like their attitudes about this. THR also, without fail, mentions that the sequel Return of the Killer Tomatoes! was the film that helped launch George Clooney's career. Well, yeah. That and ER, and The Facts of Life, and Roseanne, and being good looking, I suppose. I wonder if anyone's told his agent yet about this great opportunity to give back to the franchise?
