News > More Riddick On the Way

Written by David Morgan

Director David Twohy announced on his website last week (go to "news" and read the entry for November 13th. Also, try not to be driven insane by that tedious music) that he is considering making another film in the Riddick series (one that would follow Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick). In his words:

All I can say now is 'We're talking about it.' The DVD numbers were really good - we know that, and some potential financiers know that. But if another movie surfaces, it probably won't be a Universal movie and probably will be an independent movie. Which means we'll have to make it for substantially less than the last installment.

Considering the last Riddick film cost $110 million, and only made about $24 million in its first weekend, I don't see anyone trusting Mr. Twohy with that kind of money again any time soon. Imagine Star Wars had flopped, and George Lucas decided to finish the original trilogy in his backyard for a million dollars. Would that have worked? Why does this seem like a viable idea?

The whole reason the 2nd film tanked was because the Riddick character is not made for a large scale epic sci-fantasy picture. Pitch Black worked because it was a great script, and character for a low-budget, gritty, and dark storyline. Honestly though, I think they wrote themselves into a hole. How can you go back to what Riddick was? Prequel? Maybe to do more backstory on Riddick and Cole Hauser's character?

i, for one, am excited by this little tidbit of news...after initially not liking "Pitch Black" then revisiting it on DVD and finding it way better the 2nd - 12th times (:P) i became excited when i first heard about "The Chronicles of Riddick"...thought the first few reports that were coming down the ol'internet gossip pipe (which is frickin' huge!) was that "Riddick" was to be a trilogy...this coming on the heels of OH SO MANY trilogies i thought to my worried self, "What if they screw the whole thing up and make it big ol'messy mess mess mess?!"...but alas when time came and i missed "Riddick" in theaters (as i mostly due, not for the distaste for theaters, but my girlfriend doesn't like theaters so therefore to quote Jules "...my girlfriend's a vegetarian. Which more or less makes me a vegetarian..."), BUT i saw the man who is Vin, on DVD (unrated), and lo did he kick some major butt while growling grumbly Vin lines and being as surley as only Riddick can...i found "Riddick" to be one of the better Sci-Fi films i had seen in a long time! my hope for the trilogy had been restored...and there was much rejoicing...

soon, after the DVD sales numbers hit the web, i had high hopes for the Riddick saga to continue and then end and i would be satisfied like my brother at Golden Corral...it makes more sense if you knew my brother...anywhoser...i think that most movies feel and look better if they are more practical, SFX wise...i do not think that the cut in budget will hinder the story, too much (but really what do i know?)...it will force production to get creative...and creativity, which as we all know, makes for some great cinematic moments (bullet-time anyone)...

so to make a long story short (too late) even if this is a direct to DVD or even a limited release film (hope it comes to Utah, though NOT MANY SMALL FILMS DO, dangit!) i think that this is a good for the Riddick saga as long as the people behind it remember STORY is most important and visuals are a just a means to get the story across...

sorry poor editing, this line should read as such: "but alas time came and i missed "Riddick" in theaters"

Thank You,
