William Gibson's Neuromancer pretty much created the notion of cyber-punk, laying the ground for generations of Shadowrun dweebs and setting the early stage for a few little films you may have heard of. The Matrix? Blade Runner? And that's barely even scratching the surface of the aesthetic and thematic impact and influence Gibson's work has had on pop culture.
The studios have now decided that after so many years that the seminal piece of sci-fi needs a film adaptation, something which placed in the right hands could be a life-altering. Well, don't expect to be altered at all. Studio Seven Arts has given the film to director Joseph Kahn, master auteur behind a series of crap music videos and the motorcycle-porno Torque. I myself have never laid eyes on Torque, but from what I've heard it's entertaining in the "this is actually a film?" kind of way. But seemingly, Seven Arts (the studio behind Paul Verhoeven's next, White Queen) has faith in him and has fast-tracked the picture with him behind the wheel.
I've never read Neuromancer, but however seminal it may be, with Kahn steering the boat, you can count me out.
