Evidently the decision has been made to proceed with the Justice League of America feature, but production is gearing away from a live action film and toward its artificial looking, weird, waxy counterpart: CGI humans with motion captured movement. We've already seen, from the trailer for Zemeckis's upcoming Beowulf, that CGI can make almost-real looking people, and we've already seen motion capture work extremely well with animated features (probably most notably Happy Feet, which was able to use real choreographers and dancers thanks to the mo-cap technology), and furthermore, we've already seen a CGI/Mo-cap Superman do his thing in Bryan Singer's Superman flick. Granted, this latter case only made use of the technology for a handful of scenes, and none that involved close-ups, so it'll be interesting to see how a full blown many-superheroed feature will hang together.
At worst, it'll look fake, but were superheroes ever really meant to look real? It's at least debatable.
And at best, the producers will have a lot of flexibility when it comes to casting. They'll be able to slap any face and voice they want on the motions of any ninja body they choose. I suppose I'll withhold full judgment until I get a glimpse of the preview, and really, the bigger questions with any movie attempting to tell a large ensemble's story will always be: Can it keep from flying apart? Can it retain any semblance of focus? Or will it be crushed under the weight of its own unmanageable cast list?
