The Hollywood Reporter , whose name is too official-sounding for it to ever be wrong, says that JJ Abrams (Alias, Mission: Impossible 3) is producing and directing the next Star Trek flick. It'll evidently be a prequel to the other films, focusing on how Kirk and Spock met and befriended one another at Starfleet. The rumors as to whether or not Kirk will be played by Matt Damon remain unconfirmed.
JJ Abrams is a decent director at best (MI3 may be one of the most so-so movies ever made) and a crappy one at worst, and the screenwriters for the upcoming flick don't sound much better. Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci have written The Legend of Zorro, Mission Impossible 3, and The Island, a film whose only saving grace was the fact that its two stars are some of the most pants-creamingly attractive actors in showbusiness right now.
If I were a nerd, I'd put a joke here that went to the tune of, "Set phasers for 'potentially disappointing,'" but I won't.
Wait, shit.
