The Writers Guild of America has granted a waiver to the Independent Spirit Awards, which will air on IFC on February 23rd. The waiver allows WGA members to write the ceremony and allows WGA members and their supporters to attend the ceremony without reproach. Rainn Wilson (The Office) will host and act as a contributing writer to the program.
The Hollywood Reporter points out that this raises the possibility that the Spirit awards could upstage the Academy Awards, which are scheduled to take place the next day. The WGA has intimated that they are not going to issue a waiver for the Oscars, which might lead to many stars attending the Indie Spirits and forgoing the better known ceremony altogether out of deference to the WGA.
