There's a rumor out there in these crazy tubes that director Guillermo del Toro is planning to direct Haters, an adaptation of David Moody's novel Hater. JoBlo seems to be the source on this one, and here's the description they're giving on the project:
Society is rocked by a sudden increase in the number of violent assaults on individuals. Christened 'Haters' by the media, the attackers strike without warning. Their attacks are brutal, remorseless and extreme. There are no apparent links between the Haters or their victims and no obvious reason for their violence. In seconds rational, controlled people become vicious killers. Everyone - irrespective of race, gender, age, sexuality or any other imaginable difference - has the potential to become either a Hater or a victim. This is a terror which knows no boundaries. You can no longer trust anyone, no matter how well you think you know them. You can no longer trust yourself. By the end of today you could be a killer. By the end of today you could be dead.
It sounds like a great premise that del Toro could do a lot with, though he seems a bit swamped at the moment. He's already planning to direct an adaptation of 60s spy show The Champions, likewise he's expected to direct H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness, he's also been talking about remaking Frankenstein, not to mention directing his own 3993, yet another ghost story with connections to the Spanish Civil War. I don't mean to make it sound like I distrust JoBlo's unnamed source, but when exactly would del Toro have time for Haters?
Not that it wouldn't be fantastic.

The trick with "Haters" would be making the premise believable. Virus? Ghosts? Social breakdown? Each of these premises would create a vastly different movie.
