News > Fey, Guest, Tambor, Hodgman Join Truth

Written by David Morgan

Actors Tina Fey, Christopher Guest, Jeffrey Tambor, and John Hodgman have joined the cast of This Side of the Truth, giving the film one of the best comedy line-ups this side of… well, a Christopher Guest movie. They join writer-director-star Ricky Gervais, Jennifer Garner, Rob Lowe, Jonah Hill, and Louis C.K. in a movie set in a world in which lying does not exist until Gervais' character invents it to get ahead in love and business. Matt Robinson co-wrote the screenplay and will share directorial credit as well.

It's a little high-concept but how can you go wrong with an ensemble this good.

I think you're using the term "high-concept" in the wrong way. It sounds insane, but high concept movies are your movies that are very easy to understand, i.e. your average summer blockbuster. "Low-concept" movies are stuff like Fight Club or Memento where it requires the audience to think a lot more than normal. It sounds wrong, I know. It seems like they should switch those terms around. But yeah, I'm in a screenwriting class right now and that's what we're being taught. Plus look it up, and you'll see the same.

Not that I'm angry guy who likes to correct everybody. Just wanted to let you know.

Corrections and stuff like that don't bother me at all. Especially when they're valid.

The thing about "high concept" is that it has a variety of definitions depending on who you ask. For example, the Wikipedia article (linked below) falls in line with what you say, while the second article I found on Google agrees with me (second link). The internet isn't the most credible common ground when it comes to settling arguments, but my point is that "high concept" has a pretty malleable definition.

Thanks for keeping me in line though. I'll try to be more precise with my terminology.

It doesn't matter if it's high concept or low concept. With this cast, the movie will be amazing.

Amen to that.
