Jon Favreau, class act that he is, has been keeping up with his fans over at the Myspace forums and has been answering questions regarding the past, present, and future of his involvement with Marvel Studios and the "Iron Man" franchise. One response that's caught the eye of some out here in the film blogosphere has to do with the already-declared release date for "Iron Man 2." Favreau had this to say:
I am concerned, however, about the announced release date of April 2010. Neither Robert nor I were consulted about this and we are both concerned about how realistic the date is in light of the fact that we have no script, story or even writers hired yet. This genre of movie is best when it is done thoughtfully and with plenty of preparation. It might be better to follow the BB/DK, X/X2 three year release pattern than to scramble for a date. It is difficult because there are no Marvel 09 releases and they need product, but I also think we owe it to the fans to have a great version of IM2 and, at this point, we would have less time to make it than the first one.
It's good to hear that at the very least, the director and star of the film have enough sense to worry, even if they can only do so much to fix the situation. That said, don't sequels usually take less time to make? I'm sure every production is different, but once you've got a hit on your hands and you're bringing back the same primary cast and crew, shouldn't the whole process be somewhat streamlined? Then again, perhaps that idea applies to everything but the screenplay, which should still be taken slowly and seriously.
Keep up the skepticism, Favreau and Downey. Speaking of which, who would have thought that Robert Downey, Jr. would be the co-voice of reason anywhere? He's clearly come a long way.
