Emmy Rossum, the 21 year-old actress who has already appeared in such films as Mystic River, The Phantom of the Opera, and The Day After Tomorrow, will be playing the character Bulma in James Wong's adaptation of the popular Japanese manga Dragon Ball. She joins Justin Chatwin, who will be playing Goku, "a warrior who protects the Earth from a stream of rogues bent on dominating the universe." James Marsters (Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) will play the villainous Lord Piccolo. According to Variety, "Rossum takes on the role of Bulma, whose father's Dragon Ball is stolen by Piccolo."
Akira Toriyama wrote the original manga which has gone on to inspire graphic novels, cartoons, video games, and quite a bit of merchandise. Chinese actor-writer-director Stephen Chow is producing, while James Wong will direct from his own screenplay, though an earlier draft was written by Ben Ramsey.
