The Directors Guild of America has announced its five nominees for "Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Motion Pictures" and they are as follows (alphabetically):
Paul Thomas Anderson for There Will Be Blood
Ethan and Joel Coen for No Country for Old Men
Tony Gilroy for Michael Clayton
Sean Penn for Into the Wild
Julian Schnabel for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
The Coens, Gilroy, and Schnabel are also nominated for the Golden Globe for best direction, along with Ridley Scott (American Gangster) and Joe Wright (Atonement). Not too many surprises on this short list; these are the people everyone is talking about this season. As the AP points out, only Joel Coen has been nominated by the DGA previously (Fargo). No disrespect intended to the very worthy nominees, but I'm sure they're all glad that award show-favorites Scorsese, Eastwood, and Spielberg took the year off. Kinda levels the playing field for the new guys (though it would be hard to argue that most of these guys are "new" to the movie business).
