Editorials > Daniel Craig signs for Four More Bond Films

While the WGA has brought out the best in studios and franchises, The Hollywood Reporter buries an interesting tidbit during an interview with MGM chairman and CEO Harry Sloan. Aside from being positive there'll be no strike this Thursday, he reveals that Craig is working on contract for four more sequels to the current Casino Royale-era of James Bond.

Sloan also states his goal to bring the franchise back for MGM, including revivals of Death Wish, Fame and a third remake of The Thomas Crown Affair–or, a continuation of the Pierce Brosnan adaptation.

But there are inevitable problems with the franchise as a backbone to any studio. Even in older Bond films, the gradual change from "serious" to overtly campy could be seen by none other than the wacky gadgets Roger Moore would unleash along with his wit. Studios feel a need to mass produce these films that will inevitably saturate a market with Saws and American Pie presents. There was even the rumor during the Brosnan-era Bond that Halle Berry would get her own spin-off.

Holy smokes, Batman.  But with a four picture deal, how long is it until Craig's groundbreaking "realistic" Bond becomes too much for audiences who'll want a return to camp–and it will happen, as does every cycle with the crowd. It is easy to see why Sloan isn't worried about a writer's strike when he just plans on rehashing his entire company's portfolio anyway, even if Daniel Craig's involved.
