News > Chan Says Forbidden Kingdom "Not that Great"

Written by David Morgan

According to an article by the AP, Jackie Chan recently told us a few things that we already knew in a blog post on his website. Firstly that he only did the Rush Hour films to test the waters of American cinema and for the outlandish amount of money he was paid for the sequels, and that he personally didn't think any of the films were very good in terms of action or comedy. He's an honest fellow. Have to give him that.

But even more recently Chan said:

"The movie I just shot with Jet Li, The Forbidden Kingdom, actually isn't that great," Chan was quoted as saying by the Web site of China's official Xinhua News Agency. "The Forbidden Kingdom is a movie made for Americans," the report quoted Chan as saying. "Chinese viewers may not like it. If I say it's a good movie now, then many people will be filled with overly high expectations and be disappointed when they see the movie."

I don't think he's necessarily being anti-American but it does sound a little like he's saying we have bad taste.

I don't think he's saying Americans have bad taste, I just think that Jackie Chan knows that Chinese viewers may have different taste in movies. Especially when it comes to Hong Kong action cinema type movies.

I've been to China, and sub sequentially have watched an ass load of Chinese action films with Chinese friends. The Chinese do definately have a different taste in action films than westerners. They often consider the best of our action as crude and at best "just trying to be fast". After watching the Chinese films I can honestly understand their point of view. I do wish they would do something much more graceful, and challenging in Hollywood.

Lloyd: I wouldn't blame him for saying that even if that is what he meant. From his point of view, Americans are the people who keep going to see his Rush Hour movies. Besides, I'm sure he didn't say it maliciously.

Chan is too lovable to be malicious but it's clear that everyone knows that the majority of American audiences are shallow, fickle morons.
