Old veterans in the field of protesting motion pictures, Catholics are joining Hindus in their repulsion for Mike Myers' "The Love Guru." WENN reports that the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has given "Guru" their most severe rating, an "O" for "morally offensive." Here's the USCCB's report in more detail:
Officials at the USCCB's Office for Film and Broadcasting in New York, who are responsible for reviewing and rating theatrical motion pictures, called the film "vulgar and tasteless", adding it "wallows in endless penis jokes and fairly yucky potty humor."
I had no idea the USCCB had an Office of Film and Broadcasting (Note to self: Update resume), but I had even less of an idea that they would use the word "yucky" to describe a movie. Somebody get those bishops a thesaurus.
Hindu leader Rajan Zed, who has been at the forefront of this anti-"Love Guru" crusade, has called the USCCB's declaration a "remarkable interfaith gesture." In addition, a prominent Jewish Rabbi, Elizabeth W. Beyer of Nevada, has called for a boycott of "The Love Guru" because the film "lampoons Hinduism, mocks Ashram life and Hindu philosophy."
Could this be the one film that finally brings all religions together? Oh glorious day! Mike Myers has sacrificed his reputation in the selfless (some might say Christ-like) act of creating a film so patently offensive that it may actually put a stop to faith-based violence. Thank you, Michael. Some day your true legacy will be known.
