Elizabeth Berkley ("Saved by the Bell," "Showgirls") and Briana Evigan ("Step Up 2 the Streets") have joined the cast of "S. Darko," the sequel to Richard Kelly's cult classic "Donnie Darko." They join Ed Westwick ("Gossip Girl"), Justin Chatwin ("War of the Worlds"), and Daveigh Chase, who seems to be the only castmember from the original movie returning. Richard Kelly will not be involved this time around either.
"S. Darko" will revolve around Donnie's younger sister Samantha (played by Chase) who, now seventeen, runs away from home with her best friend (Evigan). Soon, both are plagued by visions. According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Berkley is playing a speed freak-turned-Jesus freak whose sentiments about ridding the world of its exponential sin are rivaled only by her infatuation with her dreamy pastor."
Chris Fisher ("Dirty") is directing and as far as I can tell, no one has actually written a screenplay, which shouldn't be a problem for this production. I know a lot of people are opposed to this film because they think it will tarnish the good name of "Donnie Darko," but I almost think this sequel will be so unbelievably awful that no one will take it as a serious piece of Darko-canon for more than fifteen seconds. But then again, that doesn't mean this couldn't become a minor cult classic in its own right too.
