News > Bay and Bruckheimer Reunite for "Cocaine Cowboys"?

There's a rumor in Hollywood that two of the best popcorn salesmen in the world, Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer are going to reteam to produce an HBO series based on a 2006 documentary called "Cocaine Cowboys." Variety reports that the prospective collaboration would "revolve around the drug trade in Miami in the 1980s. Instead of the flash of Crockett and Tubbs, [the show] would focus on the cutthroat world of drug dealers and the Colombian cocaine kingpins who set up shop in the once-sleepy Florida city."

No writer or director has been attached yet, and the project is still not a done deal by any means. The original documentary was directed by Billy Corben, and it's reportedly already spawned another film based on one of its central characters, drug lord Jon Roberts. Mark Wahlberg is slated to play Roberts in Peter Berg's untitled crime drama. The success of Corben's documentary enabled him to make that rare piece of art, a documentary sequel, which has already been acquired for distribution by Magnet. The sequel will be called "Cocaine Cowboys 2: Hustlin' With the Godmother."

Bay and Bruckheimer seemed to have a pretty happy marriage back in the 1990s when they created major blockbusters "The Rock," "Armageddon," and "Bad Boys," so this one sounds likely to get off the ground. Say what you will about Michael Bay's directing abilities (and we all do), he has an uncanny knack for turning $150 million into $300 million, and that's a skill to be reckoned with.
