Editorials > Bale Joins Depp and Mann in Public Enemies

Christian Bale is in negotiations to play real life G-man Melvin Purvis, the FBI agent who led the manhunt against legendary bank robber John Dillinger. Johnny Depp will play Purvis's prey for the camera of director Michael Mann (Heat, Collateral). Mann is producing with Kevin Misher of Misher Films. Production begins in March.

The film will be based on Brian Burrough's nonfiction book Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-34.

Talk about a solid cast. Depp was one of the biggest box office draws last year, and Christian Bale is Batman, for crying out loud. Mann could put just about anything up on the screen and make a hundred million. It's turning out to be quite fortunate the strike delayed Shantaram.
