Oscar-winning director Anthony Minghella died of a sudden brain hemorrhage Tuesday morning at the age of 54. Minghella had been undergoing a fairly minor neck operation in Charing Cross Hospital in London when the hemorrhage occurred.
Minghella was perhaps best known for The English Patient, which won nine Oscars in 1997 including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay (the latter two awards went to Minghella). He also directed The Talented Mr. Ripley, Cold Mountain, and Breaking and Entering, all of which featured actor Jude Law. His final film, The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, had just finished filming before he passed.
He's survived by his parents and his show biz-heavy family, including siblings Dominic Minghella and Edana Minghella, two other sisters, his wife, choreographer Carolyn Choa, and two children, actor Max Minghella and Hannah Minghella.
