   The next major wave in entertainment technology is only two years away from making a huge splash on audiences across the world. Dreamworks just announced that starting in 2009 it will release all of its features in 3-D. You may remember some of the crappier attempts Hollywood has made at 3-D in the past (Jaws 3, anyone?), but this is entirely different. There are already about 600 3-D capable screens at the present, but that number is expected to climb drastically in the future. 

   Last summer Bryan Singer's epic Superman Returns ran some select scenes in 3-D (most notably, the plane rescue sequence). This year, Disney is putting Meet the Robinson's on 3-D this month when it premiers.  James Cameron,  legendary director of Aliens and Terminator, will produce his next flick Avatar in 3-D for a premier in 2009. In 2008, New Line will release Journey 3-D, the first live action movie made exclusively with 3-D technology.

   Says DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, "By that time [2009], I think that in domestic markets we will be able to release a film entirely in 3-D." This is superb news for both fans and the film industry itself. Perhaps an advance in 3-D will bring back the allure movie theatres seems to have lost in the past few years due to the rise of home entertainment systems. High Definition is great, but I don't think it quite compares with quality 3-D technology. The next major step is holographic imaging–but of course, that may still be a good many years away. For now, I'm just hoping by the end of this decade I can check out Jessica Alba's rack in glorious 3-D.     

  Dreamworks first 3-D picture will be Monsters vs. Aliens, set to open sometime in 2009.
