DreamWorks and Paramount's "Kung Fu Panda" made an impressive $60 million this weekend, easily beating the competition that included "You Don't Mess with the Zohan" and last week's champ "Sex and the City." The Adam Sandler-Judd Apatow joint, "Zohan," also showed some impressive numbers, making approximately $40 million from 3462 runs. "Panda," featuring the voices of Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, and Angelina Jolie, earned mostly positive reviews, compared to "Zohan's" rather dismal reputation (though the esteemed A.O. Scott certainly liked it).
"Sex and the City" dropped all the way from first place to fourth, below even "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," which it had handily beat the week before. Though these top four all came out above $20 million for the weekend, a sizable gap exists between them and the bottom six, none of which made more than $10 million. Numbers 9 and 10, "Baby Mama" and "Made of Honor" respectively, each made about $775 thousand. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer during the summer (though, of course, both films have actually had fairly respectable runs up to this point).
