I've been reading comics for almost fifteen years now, and in the last four only two things have been absolutely certain: everything Brian K. Vaughan does is golden, and 'Y: The Last Man' is a comic you can bet your house, dog, girlfriend, mother, life-savings, and soul on and you will never lose.  It's just that good.  Sadly, the filmic version of the near perfect comic (quickly closing in on its final issue) has been mired in development hell for a good deal of time.  But all of that has just changed.

Hot director D.J. Caruso will re-team with his Disturbia writer Carl Ellsworth to helm the long gestating property, final putting a cap on a rumor that's been circulating for a long, long while.  What's even more interesting about this little bit of news is the increased potential of Shia Labeouf (a last name I could do without typing ever again) playing the title character, Yorick Brown.  For any and all who've read the comic and then seen any film Labeouf has been in recently, you have to admit Labeouf may have actually been created to play the character.  In the comic (written by Vaughan and drawn by Pia Guerrera) Brown is a wise-cracking, would-be magician, who becomes the last man on Earth when a plague kills every other living creature with nads.  Labeouf is a natural witty, wise-cracking kid, who's got the look and the acting ability to handle the part.  Even better, Caruso and Labeouf so enjoyed their time spent on Disturbia that they've been talking about another collaboration.

Yikes!  Just writing about this is getting me all worked up.  Caruso's first film, The Salton Sea was one of the real surprises of my film-watching life, a film I knew nothing about that just blew me out of the…water (get it…sea…water).  I still rank it amongst the most underrated, underwatched masterpieces I've seen (no matter what the rest of you fucks say! Editor's Note: I think it sucks).  Caruso is finding his voice more and more with each film and this could be the big one for him.
