News > Valkyrie Release Date Pushed Back

Written by David Morgan

Bryan Singer's World War II thriller Valkyrie will not appear in theaters until October 3rd, 2008, three months after its original release date June 27th. According to Variety, part of the reason for the move has to do with the fact that the production has yet to shoot the crucial battle scene in which Tom Cruise's character loses his eye and hand fighting in Africa. In fact, they haven't found the location in which to shoot it yet. Singer is planning to shoot this sequence in February, after having wrapped the rest of the project in October.

The premise of the fact-based film is that Cruise plays a Nazi soldier who gathers a group of high ranking German officials in a conspiracy to assassinate Adolf Hitler.

One bit of good news for this production that has had plenty of bad news (German opposition to Scientology, film negatives being accidentally destroyed, crew injuries) is that its three main competitors in the October 3rd spot are Guy Ritchie's RocknRolla, Dennis Quaid sports drama The Express, and the Michael Cera-starring Nora and Nick's Infinite Play. True, Michael Cera's star is on the rise, and Guy Ritchie is still sort of popular, but I think a movie about Tom Cruise and Nazis plotting to kill Hitler still has to be the frontrunner by a decent margin. In any case, Dennis Quaid is screwed.
