Saw IV proved to be the biggest opener of the fall with $32.1 million, earning only a little less than Saw III ($33.6 mil). Experts say this "proves" that audiences are still interested in "hardcore horror."
Steve Carell's Dan in Real Life came in a distant second with $12.1 million. 30 Days of Night dropped to third while The Game Plan has proved to be the biggest overall money-maker of the fall landing in fourth. Why Did I Get Married? found itself in fifth in its third week.
Sure enough, comedies and horror flicks are blowing prestige pics out of the water. Although George Clooney's Michael Clayton has done reasonably good business and the Affleck brothers' Gone Baby Gone was number seven this weekend, only dropping 29% from last week. Rounding out the top ten: The Comebacks, We Own the Night, and the 3D rerelease of The Nightmare Before Christmas.
