Rob Zombie's Halloween defied expectations and broke records this weekend when the horror remake took in about $26.5 million according to Hollywood Reporter and Box Office Mojo (though IMDb estimates $32.5 million). Analysts, says the Hollywood Reporter, had predicted it would take in about $20 million over the course of all four days (Friday-Monday). The film cost a mere $15 million to produce, but Bob Weinstein has said he's not expecting sequels. In his words "I never say never never … but it would have to be something very, very different."
The record for a three-day opening weekend during Labor Day was held by The Transporter 2 with $16.5 million, and the four-day record belonged to The Sixth Sense with $29.3 million.
On the flip side of things, Halloween was largely panned by the critics, both on this site and over at rottentomatoes. It's not everyday a movie gets a rating of 0% fresh on the "cream of the crop." Win some lose some, Mr. Zombie.
