News > EVA still big in Japan

Written by John Lichman

The new cut of Neon Genesis Evangelion, EVA 01: You Are (Not) Alone  opened Saturday with 84 prints screening, brought in $24 million over the weekend. Variety is in awe of how the 12-year old series can still pull in such astonishing numbers: two-day total at a large theater in Tokyo was $15 million, while other theaters averaged $3 million across the country.

The new series is a reimagining of the original, with cleaner animation, new characters and a streamlined storyline that doesn't involve the general chaos of the original. Films two through four will be released in Japan over 2008, with a probable DVD release in America in '08 or '09.  EVA 01 is the condensed first six episodes.

I'm not surprised NGE has had quite a big following for ages. I remember reading something about the WETA Workshop getting more emails about Evangelion than they were for LOTR.

I'm looking forward to seeing the first part of Rebuild of Evangelion!
