Cloverfield beat expectations for the still-going long weekend and took in $41 million, the highest gross for MLK weekend since 2001 when Black Hawk Down made $28.6 million. The Katherine Heigl-starring romantic comedy 27 Dresses struck a chord with audiences too, making a very respectable $22.4 million. The only other new wide release was Mad Money, starring Diane Keaton, Queen Latifah, and Katie Holmes. The film barely registered and landed in seventh place with $7.7 million.
