Warner Brothers is trying something new to revive its DVD sales. Five days after "Watchmen" hits theaters, "Tales of the Black Freighter," the comic-within-the-comic, will be released on DVD. According to The New York Times, the same DVD will contain a documentary-style film called "Under the Hood" which will be the original Nite Owl's account of his fellow costumed vigilantes.
Zack Snyder will likely direct both of these additional films, and has cast his "300" lead actor, Gerard Butler, as the protagonist of "Black Freighter" (Empire). Syder has said that though the DVDs will initially be released separately, there may in time be an "ultimate" edition that fuses the two features into one "megamovie."
The "Black Freighter" bits weren't my favorite sections of the comic, but I'd still be up for seeing what Snyder does with it. That said, ambitious though it may be, I don't know how palatable the unfathomably long "ultimate edition" will be.
