Comedies prevailed at the box office this weekend, but with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler proving a more profitable duo than John Cho and Kal Penn. "Baby Mama," written and directed by Martin McCullers (co-writer of the "Austin Powers" sequels, first time director), made $18.3 million from 2,543 theaters. According to Variety, women in particular flocked to the pregnancy-themed PG-13 laugher, while more men came out for the second weekend of "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" (third or fourth place at the box office depending on tonight's receipts).
"Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay" did respectable business, too, earning $14.6 million from slightly fewer theaters than "Baby Mama" (2,510).
The only other new wide release was "Deception" which did terribly, making only $2.23 million from 2,001 theaters, earning its spot in tenth place. The film featured major stars like Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams, and Ewan McGregor, but its business likely suffered from miserable reviews and lack of publicity (I, for example, didn't even realize it was coming out this weekend).
All other listings and extensive coverage can be found at Box Office Mojo.
And that officially wraps it up for the Spring movie calendar. Next weekend will be May 2nd-4th, the start of Summer Blockbuster Season, kicked off by Jon Favreau's "Iron Man." Does anyone want to start making predictions now?
